A foundation for bees · Portugal

Where grief
grew wings.

Cosmos Bee is a small foundation building permanent, protected land sanctuaries for bees across Portugal — watched over by quiet sensors, not fences.

Our story

For the two years since our father passed away, we have visited his resting place for commemoration.

Flowers grew on his tomb, calling bees to keep his seldom soul a busy company. These flowers are Cosmos Sulphureus — and along with the bees, they became the symbol of our new endeavour: to find a way to heal nature, for a better future.

Cosmos Bee began as a small, personal gesture and is becoming a foundation. We buy and protect não urbanizável land across Portugal — land that can never legally be built on — and turn it into permanent, undisturbed habitat for bees. We watch over each sanctuary with quiet IoT monitoring, so the land stays wild and the bees stay safe, without needing to be disturbed to be understood.

— In memory of our father, and for every bee that visits him.

How we watch over the hives

Monitoring that never opens a hive.

Each sanctuary carries a small set of solar-powered sensors. They tell us how the colonies are doing so our small team can act early — without smoke, without disturbance, without guesswork.

Temperature & humidity

Brood-nest conditions reveal colony health long before it's visible from outside — heat and moisture tell the story first.

Sound

Acoustic sensing

The hum of a hive changes with its mood. Acoustic patterns help us hear queenlessness or distress from a distance.

The land we protect

Land that can never be built on.

Across Portugal, land zoned não urbanizável can never legally hold a building. It's usually overlooked — too steep, too rural, too small to develop.

To us, that makes it ideal. We buy these parcels outright and leave them largely alone: native flora, undisturbed soil, no traffic, no pesticide drift from neighbouring development. Just space, permanently set aside for pollinators.

Every sanctuary is registered, monitored, and never resold for development — that protection is written into how we hold the land.
